Description

Our unique and complex methods of communication distinguish us from all other creatures on earth. Humans communicate in a variety of ways - by voice, by written word, by body signals. Over time, we have developed a bounty of tools that enable us to communicate on many levels - newspapers, magazines, books, television, radio, and in recent years, the internet.

With so many communication venues available, it's no wonder that writing has become such an important skill and profession. Here in Hawaii, we have six daily newspapers, dozens of non-daily papers and magazines on nearly every subject, from business to lifestyle, from the visitor industry to the beverage industry. The state also boasts four major and several public television stations, numerous radio stations and thousands of Hawaii-based websites.

As a result of so many communication venues, Hawaii has produced or attracted hundreds of writers, some working at newspapers, some at private or public companies and others in freelance capacities. Diversity is synonymous with Hawaii, and the island chain is filled with diverse facets about which to write - science and high tech, education, health, agriculture, recreation, culture and the environment.

A Language of the Land writers' conference has been planned on Oahu and Hawaii Island by Hawaii Island Writers Association (HIWA), Pacific Writers Connection and The Orion Society October 1 through 6 to address some of these unique subject matters and offerings. The conference is expected to bring together writers, artists, cultural practitioners, environmentalists, interested community members and others who work for the health of Hawaii's natural environment.

HIWA nurtures the growth of all writers by facilitating the creation of networks that connect writers with each other, with mentors and publishers. Through HIWA's annual conference, various workshops, readings and retreats, writers are provided opportunities for enrichment and growth.
